Check-up & clean, quote before treatment
A lot of people don’t avoid the dentist because they don’t care. They avoid it because the last time felt rushed, or judgemental, or because a filling once hurt, or simply because life got busy and one missed check-up quietly turned into five years. If any of that sounds familiar, you’re exactly who we built this practice for.
General dentistry at Dental Embassy is the everyday care that keeps your teeth healthy and comfortable for life — examinations, professional cleans, fillings, root canal therapy, gum treatment, and extractions when a tooth genuinely can’t be saved. It’s the foundation everything else is built on. And we deliver it the way we’d want it ourselves: honestly, gently, and without making you feel bad about how long it’s been.
The whole practice team provides general care, led by our principal dentist Dr Srikanth Karumuri (Dr Sri). And because we have sedation available — happy gas, oral sedation, or IV — even a check-up or a filling can be a calm experience if the dental chair is something you dread.
No lectures. No pressure. Just steady, preventive-first care in Braddon.
What General Dentistry Covers
“General dentistry” is a broad term, so here’s what it actually means day to day. These are the core services that keep most people’s mouths healthy without ever needing anything more complicated.
- Examinations and check-ups — a thorough look at your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, plus an oral cancer screening and x-rays where needed.
- Professional cleans (scale and polish) — removing the hardened plaque and tartar that a toothbrush can’t shift, and polishing away surface stain.
- Fillings — repairing decayed or chipped teeth with tooth-coloured composite that blends in naturally.
- Root canal therapy — saving a tooth whose nerve has become infected or inflamed, rather than losing it.
- Gum (periodontal) care — treating and managing gum disease before it costs you teeth.
- Extractions — removing a tooth gently when it’s beyond saving, with options to replace it afterwards.
- Preventive advice — practical, no-nonsense guidance on keeping problems from coming back.
If a problem needs something more involved — surgical wisdom teeth, implants, aligners — we can usually handle that in-house too, so you’re not bounced around between practices. But the vast majority of what keeps a mouth healthy sits right here in general dentistry.
Check-Ups & Cleans
A check-up isn’t just a quick glance and a “see you in six months.” It’s the single most valuable appointment you have, because almost every expensive dental problem started as a small, painless one that a check-up would have caught.
At your examination, we look at each tooth for decay and cracks, check your gums for signs of disease, examine your bite and any wear from grinding, and screen the soft tissues of your mouth for anything unusual. Where it’s useful, we take x-rays to see between the teeth and below the gumline — the areas the eye can’t reach. If we spot something, we show you on the screen and explain it in plain language before we talk about what to do.
The clean that follows removes the hardened tartar that brushing and flossing simply can’t — the stuff that fuels gum disease and bad breath — and polishes away everyday stain from coffee, tea and red wine. Most people leave with that fresh, smooth-teeth feeling and a clear picture of where their mouth is at.
How often you need one depends on you. Six months suits most people, but we’ll give you an honest interval based on your actual risk, not a rigid rule.
Fillings
When decay gets through the enamel, it doesn’t heal on its own — it spreads, and the longer it’s left, the closer it gets to the nerve, where a simple filling can turn into a root canal. Catching and filling decay early is one of the best-value things you can do for your teeth.
We use tooth-coloured composite (white) fillings that bond directly to the tooth and are matched to your natural shade, so repairs blend in rather than standing out. The area is fully numbed first, so the procedure itself is comfortable, and if the numbing injection is something you find stressful, sedation is available for that too.
We’ll always talk you through what we found and why a filling is the right call. If a small early spot of decay can safely be monitored and managed with better cleaning and fluoride instead of drilling, we’ll tell you that — preventive-first means not reaching for the drill when we don’t need to.
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment has a fearsome reputation it doesn’t really deserve. It’s the treatment that saves a badly infected or abscessed tooth — the alternative is usually losing the tooth altogether. And with modern techniques and thorough numbing, most patients tell us it feels much like having a filling done.
When the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed — from deep decay, a crack, or an old injury — it can cause severe toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, or a painful abscess. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the internal canals, and seals them. The tooth is then usually protected with a crown so it can keep doing its job for years.
We’ll always give you an honest assessment of whether a tooth is worth saving. Sometimes it is; occasionally it isn’t, and an extraction with a plan to replace the tooth is the more sensible path. Either way, you’ll get a clear explanation and a written quote before anything goes ahead. And if the idea of the appointment makes you anxious, sedation is on the table.
Gum Health
Gum disease is the quiet one. It rarely hurts in its early stages, which is exactly why it’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — people don’t notice it until teeth start feeling loose. The good news is that caught early, it’s very manageable.
Bleeding when you brush or floss, puffy or receding gums, persistent bad breath, or a bad taste can all be early signs. At your check-up we measure the health of your gums and look for these warning signs. Early gum inflammation (gingivitis) often reverses with a professional clean and better home care. More advanced disease (periodontitis) needs deeper cleaning below the gumline and ongoing maintenance, which we’ll set up with you.
Healthy gums are the foundation your teeth sit in — look after them and everything else lasts longer.
The Judgement-Free Approach
Here’s the thing we want you to know before you even walk in: we are not going to make you feel bad.
We know the reasons people fall out of the habit. Dental anxiety. A rough experience somewhere years ago. Cost. Busyness. Embarrassment that quietly grows the longer you stay away. None of that is a character flaw, and none of it is something we’ll lecture you about. When you sit in the chair, we look at where your mouth is now — not where it “should” be — and we build a plan forward from there.
In practice, that means:
- No guilt-trips. You won’t get a speech about how long it’s been. We’ve heard it all, and we’re just glad you came in.
- Honest, preventive-first advice. We’ll tell you what genuinely needs doing, what can wait, and what can be watched — not a wish-list of treatment.
- Your pace, your priorities. If there’s a lot to work through, we can stage it over time and start with what matters most to you, whether that’s comfort, cost or appearance.
- Plain language. We explain what we see on the screen, in words that make sense, so you can make your own informed decision.
Plenty of our patients arrive nervous and apologetic and leave a little surprised at how calm it was. That’s the whole idea.
Sedation for Nervous Patients
You don’t have to “just cope” with dental anxiety, and you certainly don’t need to be having surgery to be sedated. If the sound of the drill, the injection, or simply sitting in the chair fills you with dread, sedation can turn a stressful appointment into something you barely remember — even for routine work like a check-up, clean or filling.
We offer three levels, and we’ll help you choose what suits you:
- Nitrous oxide (happy gas) — a light, conscious sedation you breathe through a small nose mask. It takes the edge off within minutes and wears off almost immediately afterwards, so you can drive yourself home. A great starting point for mild anxiety.
- Oral sedation — a prescribed tablet taken before your appointment that leaves you drowsy and deeply relaxed, with most patients remembering little of the visit.
- IV sedation — the deepest option, administered by Dr Sri or our travelling sedationist Anna Huang through a small cannula. You’ll rest in a sleep-like state and typically remember none of it.
Many anxious patients start with happy gas for a simple clean, find it far more manageable than they feared, and build their confidence from there. There’s no wrong choice and no pressure — the goal is simply to get you the care you need in a way you can handle.
General Dentistry Cost & Health Funds
We believe you should know what things cost before you commit to them — no vague answers, no surprises at the front desk.
A standard check-up and clean starts from $220, which typically covers your examination, scale and clean, and any necessary x-rays discussed on the day. For anything beyond a routine visit — a filling, root canal, extraction or gum treatment — we provide a clear, written, itemised quote after your examination, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you. Costs vary genuinely from person to person because the treatment does; a single small filling and a complex root canal are not the same procedure and shouldn’t cost the same.
Health fund members: we accept all funds and process your claim on the spot with HICAPS, so you only pay the gap. We’re preferred providers for Defence Health, HCF and NIB, which usually means a lower out-of-pocket cost on those funds. Just bring your card.
Children under 18: if your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), we bulk bill it — covering check-ups, cleans, fillings, x-rays and more up to the cap, at no out-of-pocket cost to you. We’ll check eligibility at the front desk.
Payment plans: for larger treatment plans, we offer interest-free payment options through Humm, ZIP, Afterpay and TLC, so you can spread the cost rather than delay the care. Ask our team which option suits you best.
Whether you’re a local walking down from the Lonsdale Street cafes or coming in from further across Canberra, you’ll get the same straightforward pricing and the same honest advice.
Important: Any dental treatment carries risks, and outcomes vary between individuals. The fees noted here are indicative starting points only — your written quote is provided after an examination. Before proceeding with treatment, you should seek advice appropriate to your own circumstances from a qualified health practitioner.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
For most adults, every six months works well — it lets us catch decay, gum problems and cracks while they’re small and cheap to fix. But it isn’t one-size-fits-all. If your teeth and gums are healthy and stable, we might stretch you to nine or twelve months. If you’re prone to decay, grind your teeth, or have gum disease, we may suggest three-to-four monthly visits for a while. We’ll give you an honest interval based on your mouth, not a default rule.
A standard check-up and clean at Dental Embassy starts from $220. That typically covers your examination, a scale and clean, and any necessary x-rays discussed on the day. If we find something that needs treatment, we’ll give you a written, itemised quote before booking anything — you’ll never be surprised by a bill. If you have extras cover, we claim on the spot through HICAPS so you only pay the gap.
No. This is genuinely the most common thing we hear, and it’s exactly why we work the way we do. Life gets busy, dental anxiety is real, and a lot of people put it off until something hurts. We don’t lecture, we don’t tut, and we don’t make you feel bad about the gap. We simply look at where things are now, tell you honestly what we see, and help you decide what to do next — at a pace that suits you. Plenty of our patients haven’t been in five, ten, even fifteen years. You’re welcome here.
We accept all health funds and process claims instantly through HICAPS, so you only pay the gap on the day. We’re also preferred providers for Defence Health, HCF and NIB, which usually means lower out-of-pocket costs and higher rebates on those funds. Just bring your fund card to your appointment and we’ll swipe it at the front desk.
Yes. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare program that covers up to around $1,000 of dental care over two calendar years for eligible children, and we bulk bill it — meaning no out-of-pocket cost for check-ups, cleans, fillings, x-rays and more within the cap. We’ll check your child’s eligibility at the front desk before their appointment, so you know exactly where you stand.
Yes. You don’t need to be having surgery to use sedation. If check-ups, cleans or fillings make you anxious, we offer nitrous oxide (happy gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation for routine treatment — whatever level helps you get through comfortably. Many nervous patients start with happy gas for a clean, realise it’s manageable, and build from there. We’ll talk through the options with no pressure at your first visit.
We’ll show you exactly what we’ve found — on the x-ray or with an intraoral photo — and explain what it means in plain language. Then we give you options and a written quote. Nothing gets done in the same appointment without your say-so (unless you’ve asked us to), and there’s never pressure to commit on the spot. If something can safely be watched rather than treated, we’ll tell you that too. Honest, preventive-first care means not selling you dentistry you don’t need.
No referral is needed for general dental care. You can book a check-up or an appointment for a specific concern directly — just call us on 1300 000 230 or book online. If you later need something more involved like surgical extractions or implants, Dr Simon Flanagan handles a lot of that in-house too, so you usually won’t be sent elsewhere.
Call us on 1300 000 230 as early in the day as you can. Toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling, swelling or an abscess — we keep room for urgent problems and will get you seen as quickly as possible. If a tooth has been knocked out, keep it moist (in milk or held in the cheek) and bring it with you. The sooner we see you, the more options we usually have.
